The Top Record of the Year: The Artist's Lux Claims the Number One Place.

Initially, this album could seem more like a difficult academic examination than a new popular music album from a musician whose previous hit featured an international K-pop star. Broken across 4 different parts and performed in 13 languages, it is a dizzying symphonic album that delves into female mystique, spiritual transcendence, and bodily transformation, often by way of the perspective of various women saints. The dissolution of a romance—a topic treated with grounded openness elsewhere—is launched heavenward on this record, carried by the constant sound of a major orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning composer among a vast list of collaborators. Its sheer daring by itself renders the efforts of contemporary artists seem rather laughable.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

That this album manages to avoid dry intellectual chin-stroking feels almost miraculous, and full praise going to Rosalía. Although this is not her first project to alchemize the past and modern styles, the stakes feel much higher on Lux, with the tightrope walk more pronounced. What truly raises her fourth release, outside of its complex melodies, dense arrangements, and inherent drama, proves to be a core spirit of joy. Similar to the legendary Björk at her height, you find a captivating sense to Rosalía's voice which sweeps you up in its tornado. When she's tearing your heart in two, the listener nevertheless desire to be right there through the journey.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

This exuberant energy shines clearly on a stunning piano-led song inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool over more than four minutes. Suddenly, everything drops away, to reveal we hear a gleeful laugh followed by a declaration before a comically over-the-top string surge thuds down like cartoonish impact. The song then shifts to the wild single driven by galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a surprise appearance from the artist Björk.

"The charm with this album is that you rarely quite understand—or even wish to predict—what you is going to next."

Almost each track concludes at a completely distinct point from where it started. A track examines the transient trappings of celebrity over a featherlight symphony only to disintegrating in digital chaos. Another, a song echoing her previous rhythmic work starts off moody and sinister, with prowling vocals, before sudden traditional rhythms and a heavenly chorus enter to smooth its jagged edges.

The Balance Between Art and Accessibility

A key achievement on the album is straddling the line of bold innovation and mainstream accessibility. This is little coincidence that it has become her first release to crack the Top 5 of key charts: its heart contains a collection of utterly catchy hits. A song performed primarily in English swells around a refrain that feels to gather increasingly nagging melodies as it spins skyward. This trick gets echoed by a different powerful track that expands and constricts, intertwining multiple melodies as a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like song charms via its playful, theatrical flair and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the pop culture honesty of other breakup anthems, lambasting an ex- partner labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals have a sharp smile, akin to a storybook figure hiding a blade: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of disappointment."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

Lux is popular music on a grand scale, an ambitious grasp for capital-A artistry in an era of impending AI-generated sameness. It eschews solipsism for sublime elevation, crafting a dramatic spectacle that skillfully controls its own built-in ridiculousness. This is an abundant source of buried gems that requires time to fully explore but never feels like a chore. Where other big pop albums of 2025 seemed like a meager meal, this record is a lavish feast at which the guests around the table, perhaps tipsy on sacred drink, flit between conversations about ancient figures, the profound feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and shared stories about useless men. It is a modern-day theatrical production from pop's most endlessly inventive visionary.
